There are two new anthologies of note coming out this week and next:
The Best American Noir of the Century, edited by Otto Penzler and James Ellroy, features classics by James M. Cain, Mackinlay Kantor, Micket Spillane, Evan Hunter, Jim Thompson, Cornell Woolrich, Patricia Highsmith, and some recent names—Jeffery Deaver, Lawrence Block, Elmore Leonard, Patricia Highsmith, Joyce Carol Oates, Dennis Lehane. The fact that 20 of the 39 stories (published between 1923 and 2007) are from the last two decades shows that noir is very much alive and well.
The annual offering of Best American Mystery Stories (2010 edition) is edited this year by Lee Child and includes a Sherlock Homes pastiche by Lyndsay Faye, as well as wide variety of other themes and styles by Jay Brandon, Lynda Leidiger, Doug Alleyn, Dennis Lehane, Phillip Margolin and Jon Land.
