Actually, although this is indeed what it looks like—a desk made out of books—it was created when a fire in the Architecture building at Delft University of Technology burned down a portion of their book collection. Instead of throwing away the old, unburned books, they stacked them up to create this administrative desk, which they placed — where else? In the library.
