The Tony Hillerman Writers Weekend in Santa Fe, New Mexico, is coming up soon in November, and if you're interested, you should note the September 25th early-bird registration deadline. Margaret Coel will be there with an all-day session on characters and dialog, and there will also be workshops by psychologist and author Bill O'Hanlon, editor Judith Van Gieson and a keynote address from Valerie Plame Wilson, outed former CIA spy and author of the memoir Fair Game (made into a movie being released this fall).
The William F. Deeck Grant for Unpublished Writers is open for submissions through November 15, 2010. This is an opportunity for writers who are unpublished in the mystery genre and includes a $1,500 award to be used for conference/workshop attendance or resources. The grant winners also receive complementary comprehensive registration and a two-night hotel stay for Malice Domestic 23.
You also still have time to get your tickets for the annual Black Orchid Wolfe Pack Banquet during the Bouchercon mystery conference in San Francisco this year. Friday, October 15th is the banquet date, with a six-course French menu (and wine to match each course) from Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe story Too Many Cooks. Keynote speaker Gayle Lynds will talk about "Nero Wolfe, the Spy," and the Nero and Black Orchid Awards will also be announced.
