One of the Best Fests in the West

Coming up this weekend in the City of Angels: the annual Los Angeles Times Festival of Books. Both Saturday and Sunday the Mystery Writers of America sponsors crime fiction panels in the Dodd 147 room on the UCLA campus, with a host of authors as special guests, talking on subjects from "Mystery: Crime and Punishment" with Megan Abbott, Attica Locke, Stuart Neville and Domenic Stansberry; to "Mystery: Watching the Detectives" with Elizabeth George, Susan Kandel, Lisa Lutz, Stuart Woods; to "Mystery: The Pageturners" with David Ellis, Andrew Gross, Gregg Hurwitz and Karin Slaughter.

There's a host of other panels and sessions spread out over other venues, including James Ellroy in conversation with Joseph Wambaugh, and the formidable group of Michael Connelly, Robert Crais and T. Jefferson Parker on the panel "Mystery: The Kingpins." Speaking of Parker, he participated in a Q&A on the Times site leading up to the festival.

LA's Mystery Bookstore has two days of author signings at Booth 411 from 10 a.m. Saturday to 4 p.m. Sunday, and Mysterious Galaxy will be up from San Diego with its own author-signing booth. Plus, Mystery Bookstore also has a pre-festival books bash on Friday with author signings and other authors dropping by.
