Media Murder for Monday

It's the start of a new week and that means it's time for a brand-new roundup of crime drama news:

THE BIG SCREEN/MOVIES

The National Society of Film Critics held its 60th annual awards voting meeting on Saturday and released their picks for the best movies of 2025. Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, about an ex-revolutionary forced back into his former combative lifestyle when he and his daughter are pursued by a corrupt military officer, was the clear winner, with nods for Best Picture of 2025, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress (Teyana Taylor), and Best Supporting Actor (Benicio del Toro). Other crime drama winners include Best Screenplay - Jafar Panahi for It Was Just an Accident, a group of former Iranian political prisoners who face the question of whether to exact revenge on a man they believe may be their tormentor; and Best Film Not in the English Language - The Secret Agent, a neo-noir historical political thriller film written and directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho, which follows a former professor caught in the political turmoil of the final years of the Brazilian military dictatorship.

A new trailer preview was released for Avengers: Doomsday, the highly anticipated Marvel movie reuniting its most famous superheroes against a new enemy: Robert Downey Jr’s Doctor Doom. The trailer focuses on Chris Hemsworth, who returns as Thor, the God of Thunder, with a previous trailer revealing the return of Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, Captain America.

TELEVISION/STREAMING

Sky revealed that their new drama set in the fictitious Welsh town of Morfa Halen will be launching in the new year and also released a trailer. Titled Under Salt Marsh, the crime thriller boasts a star-studded cast and was filmed in Gwynedd and Anglesey. The series centers around a close-knit community nestled between towering mountains and a rapidly encroaching sea that poses a threat to its very existence. Kelly Reilly, known for her role in Yellowstone, takes the lead as Jackie Ellis, a former detective turned teacher who stumbles upon the body of her eight-year-old pupil. This grim discovery sends ripples through the town as it rekindles an unresolved cold case, the vanishing of Jackie's niece. The death of her student prompts the return of Jackie's ex-partner, Detective Eric Bull, portrayed by Rafe Spall, who spearheads the investigation into a community he previously let down. Convinced the cases are connected, Jackie and Eric must mend their relationship and race against time to unearth long-hidden secrets within the town. The limited series from writer, creator, and executive producer Claire Oakley will be launching on Sky Stream, Sky Atlantic, and Now from Friday, January 30.

Fox dropped a new trailer for Patrick Dempsey’s Memory of a Killer, in which he stars as a hitman struggling with Alzheimer’s as he balances his dangerous double life. The drama series is inspired by the book of the same name and the 2003 award-winning Belgian film, De Zaak Alzheimer, and marks Dempsey’s first series regular role in broadcast television since Grey’s Anatomy. In addition to leads Dempsey, Michael Imperioli and Odeya Rush, the series stars Richard Harmon as Joe, a hitman; Daniel David Stewart as Jeff, Maria’s husband; Peter Gadiot as Dave, a local police detective; and Gina Torres as Special Agent Linda Grant. Memory of a Killer will launch with a special two-night premiere on Sunday Jan. 25 at 10 p.m. ET following the NFC Championship game. On Jan. 26, the show will premiere at 9 p.m. ET in its normal time slot with an all-new episode, followed by the Season 2 premiere of Extracted.

Deadline has a handy reference list with 2026 premiere dates for new and returning series on broadcast, streaming, and cable in the U.S.
